III.The mandatory post-Brexit documents

Since the United Kingdom left the European Union in 2021, the rules for pet entry have changed. More complex, but perfectly manageable with good preparation. Here is the complete checklist for entering the UK with your pet.

01.ISO 11784/11785 microchip

Your pet must be identified by a microchip compliant with ISO 11784/11785 standards (the international standard). If your pet has an older non-compliant chip, you'll need to bring a chip reader. The microchip must be implanted BEFORE the rabies vaccination for the latter to be valid.

02.Valid rabies vaccination

Rabies vaccination must be carried out by a vet at least 21 days before travel. It must be up to date per your vet's protocol (generally valid 1 to 3 years depending on vaccines used). The microchip must have been implanted before the vaccination.

03.Animal Health Certificate (AHC)

This is the central post-Brexit document. The AHC replaces the former European pet passport for travel from the EU (which remains valid for intra-EU travel but is no longer accepted for entering the UK). The AHC must be issued by an authorised Official Veterinarian (OV) and is valid 10 days for UK entry, then 4 months for travel within the UK and return to the EU.

04.Tapeworm treatment (dogs only)

For dogs, a treatment against Echinococcus multilocularis is mandatory. It must be administered by a vet between 24 and 120 hours (5 days) before entering the UK, and recorded on the AHC. This timing is strict: too early or too late and the pet will be turned away at the border.

05.Maximum 5 pets per person

Legal limit for non-commercial travel. Beyond this, you fall into commercial import regime which imposes other formalities.

A single document error = pet turned away at Coquelles. Our role: eliminate this risk through upstream coordination with your vet.

IV.Eurotunnel Le Shuttle explained

Eurotunnel Le Shuttle (not to be confused with Eurostar) is the train that transports vehicles under the Channel between Coquelles (France) and Folkestone (UK). It is the only land transport accepting pets on the Paris-London corridor.
