The Hôtel de Crillon — 18th-century royal palace

Built from 1758 by order of Louis XV, the building is the work of royal architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel — who also designed the Petit Trianon at Versailles and the École Militaire. The facade is one of the most prestigious in Paris, forming with its twin (the Naval Ministry) the northern perspective of Place de la Concorde.

The private mansion belonged to the Count of Crillon from 1788 to 1907 (the family lived here through the French Revolution, the Directory, the Empire and all 19th-century monarchies). Transformed into a luxury hotel in 1909, the Crillon immediately became a place of power. On June 4, 1919, the Treaty of Versailles is prepared here. In 1927, Charles Lindbergh celebrates his transatlantic crossing. Marlene Dietrich, John Travolta, Madonna have all stayed here.

Acquired by Rosewood Hotels & Resorts in 2010, the palace underwent a 4-year €200 million renovation (2013-2017). Karl Lagerfeld signs the two Marie-Antoinette Suites, Aline Asmar d'Amman redesigns common spaces, Cyril Vergniol and Tristan Auer the rooms. Facade and roof classified Historic Monument. The Crillon reopens in July 2017 with 124 rooms and suites, two starred restaurants, and the official palace status.
