The Ritz Paris — a century of Parisian legend
When César Ritz opened the doors of his palace on June 1st, 1898, he literally invented modern luxury hospitality. The first hotel in the world to offer electricity in every room, telephone, and private bathrooms, the Ritz immediately became the darling of European aristocracy. The word "ritzy" entered the English language in the 1920s to describe what is supremely chic.
Located in the heart of Place Vendôme, the Ritz occupies the former Hôtel particulier of the Duke of Lauzun (17th century), restored and expanded. Its facade and inner courtyards are classified Historic Monument. The windows look directly onto Vendôme column and the windows of the greatest Haute Joaillerie houses (Cartier, Chaumet, Boucheron, Van Cleef & Arpels).
The palace went through World Wars hosting alternately German officers (occupation), Ernest Hemingway who came to "liberate the Bar" in 1944, then the post-war elite. Acquired in 1979 by Mohamed Al-Fayed, it underwent a €200 million renovation between 2012 and 2016 under architect Thierry Despont. Reclassified as official palace by the French State, it reopened in June 2016 with 142 rooms and suites — including 71 suites, some among the most legendary in the world.

Coco Chanel Suite
Gabrielle Chanel lived here for 34 years, from 1934 until her death in 1971. Decorated with Coromandel screens, Chinese screens and black lacquered furniture, the suite has been restored to its original condition. Garden view. Indicative rate: from €30,000 per night.
Imperial Suite
The most prestigious at the Ritz, classified Historic Monument. Inspired by the apartments at Versailles, it has hosted Edward VII, Tsar Nicholas II, Ernest Hemingway and more recently many heads of state. Living room, dining room, two bedrooms. Place Vendôme view.
Windsor Suite
Named after the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (Edward VIII who abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson), frequent residents of the Ritz in the 1950s-60s. English Regency décor, music room, green marble bathtub.
F. Scott Fitzgerald Suite
The author of The Great Gatsby stayed here in the 1920s with his wife Zelda. Art Deco library, club chairs, atmosphere of an American novel in Paris. It is said he began writing Tender Is the Night here.
The Coco Chanel Suite
Gabrielle Chanel lived here for 34 years, from 1934 until her death in January 1971. The suite, restored to original in 2016, preserves the Coromandel screens she collected and the armchairs where she received guests. She designed her collections here, wrote to Stravinsky and Picasso, and watched the Place Vendôme storefronts from her window.

Hemingway Bar
One of the most iconic bars in the world. Decorated like Hemingway's writing cabinet with fishing rods and trophies. Colin Field, legendary head bartender, long officiated here. Signature cocktail: Picasso Martini. No reservations, first come basis.
Salon Proust
Tribute to Marcel Proust who spent evenings at the Ritz. Legendary afternoon tea with madeleines, scones, signature pastries by the Ritz's head pastry chef. Wood panelling, velvet armchairs, fin-de-siècle atmosphere. Service from 3:30pm to 6pm.
Bar Vendôme
Place Vendôme side, opening directly onto the square and the column. Terrace open in fine weather. Creative cocktail menu revisiting classics (Sidecar, French 75). Ideal for a pre-dinner aperitif or post-shopping pause.
The Hemingway Bar
On August 25, 1944, the day Paris was liberated, Ernest Hemingway entered the Ritz armed, followed by his squadron, and declared he had "liberated the bar". Renamed in his honour, this tiny 35-seat bar is today considered one of the top five hotel bars in the world. Signature cocktail: Picasso Martini.
